Ask: Have you ever tried something, without asking for advice first, and it didn't go as planned?
Discuss: This is what David did when he asked Joab to make his men conduct a census (count) of how many mighty warriors he had in his kingdom. 1 Chronicles tells us that "an adversary" incited or gave David the idea to do the census. This displeased God greatly and the effects were devastating for everyone, not just David. We may not know all the reasons God was so upset with a census, besides David listening to his own pride, wanting to be the one in control and not seeking God's counsel. It may also be because David considered the army his and didn't give the glory rightfully to God or because he didn't seek God's advice through prayer first before he commanded it be done.
In everything we do, we should seek advice from God and remember David's own words of praise for God
'Yours, O Lord , is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty.
Everything in the heavens and on earth is yours, O Lord , and this is your kingdom.
We adore you as the one who is over all things. Wealth and honor come from you
alone, for you rule over everything. Power and might are in your hand, and at your
discretion people are made great and given strength.' 1 Chronicles 29:11-12

What are some practical ways we can seek God's advice before making decisions?
Everything we do or say has consequences sometimes not just for us, but for other people. This means it can affect others and ourselves. Here are some simple steps that might be helpful when making decisions
>Did you pray about it?
'Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything.
Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. '
Philippians 4:6 https://my.bible.com/bible/116/PHP.4.6
Paul reminds the church at Philippi to pray about everything and give God praise
>Has God provided direction thru scripture?
I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
Psalms 119:11 NLT https://my.bible.com/bible/116/PSA.119.11.nlt
We can read scripture to help us find answers and when we memorize scripture, hide it in our hearts, we will remember it when we need it most
