Older Ignition

Ask: What do you think a mighty warrior king should like, maybe you have seen one in a movie or read about one in a book?

Discuss: Over 3,000 years ago, Israel begged God to send them a mighty warrior king like their neighboring nations. God allowed Samuel to appoint Saul as their king, he was tall and handsome, he looked exactly like what they thought they wanted. But God knew one thing about Saul that they didn't, he was able to see Saul's true heart. God knew that having a king wasn't going to be everything they thought it was, at least with Saul. Saul continually didn't seek God first, his heart was not after God in any of his decisions. He didn't depend on God, he depended on himself. God then sent to anoint one a son of a man named Jesse. When got to his house and met the sons he thought for sure he was in the right place, they all looked like mighty warriors, great men who could definitely lead Israel. But he was wrong, God wasn't looking at their outside appearances he was looking at their hearts, something they couldn't hide from God. None of them had the heart for God that mattered. Finally the last boy came in, young and small, he had just left the sheep he had been tending. His name was David, with a heart after God, he was appointed as the next king of Israel. We will spend the next two months learning more about David's life and his heart for God.

Do: review this week's Point and verse together (if your child can read, take turns reading it to each other) then watch this Saddleback video together

Bonus:  David's Life/Our Lives

Ask: Did you know that Jesus is also called a shepherd, just like David? And that when he was born, an angel first went to shepherds out in a field to tell them the news?

Do: Read Isaiah 40:11

He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young.

Discuss: Shepherds have very important jobs, taking care of their sheep. This may not always be fun or seen as cool, but it is very important. Sheep trust their shepherd and even know his voice. This is the same for Christ Followers, we can trust that he will keep his promises if we believe. Jesus holds us in his heart!
