[This month we are learning about the "extras" or other people in the story surrounding Jesus' birth. In a a story, there are the main characters, the stars or most valuable players (mvp's) and then there are the "extras". Sometimes we know their names, like Joseph and Herod and sometimes we don't know much about them, like the shepherds and the wise men.]
Do: Watch the video from Saddleback Kids
Ask: Did you know that the wise men brought Jesus three gifts (gold, frankincense and myrrh) but we don't actually know how many "guys with gifts" went searching for Jesus and found him?
Discuss: Sometimes they are called kings, but they were probably scholars who were not Jewish but had studied Jewish texts . They knew God promised that the true Jewish king, the star, would rise from David's heirs (Numbers 24:12) and he would be born in Bethlehem in Judea (Micah 5:2) So they traveled, and they traveled, and after meeting with Herod they found Jesus. They went on a quest and found that God kept his promises. Their journey shows that Jesus came for everyone, in the whole world, not just the people of Judea.
